It is known that the child's construction is still one of the wonders of engineering in the universe that has not been thoroughly understood. "Scientists from Bierutowice" are still wondering how it is possiblethat children combine the properties of super resistors (it's easy to "invoke" by asking them to eat, for example, broccoli) with superconductivity (when it comes to playing comps, eating sweets and doing everything that parents "do not recommend" turns on by itself) . In addition, you can be sure that our children are completely like yours, that is they try to always work at the lowest resistance line.
Calmly. Ewa and Tymek are in full mental health. You do not have to call the police, we do not imprison our children in a room with a book, a chair and a cup of water.
Exactly a year ago, we introduced two habits that were supposed to "survive" reading skills in our children over the holidays. We managed to achieve more meaning!
Somewhere in the depths of the Internet I read that two-month vacations cause the erasure of knowledge that young people absorb for a minimum of one month of intensive learning. In the case of our children, I have the impression that the foregoing erasures always fell on the ability to read.

Why did we care about "survival"?
Both Tymek and Ewa they are slightly dyslexic. Zanim “ukrzyżujecie” rodzica – że wmawia dzieciom choroby, przeczytajcie dalej. Nasze podejście do dysleksji nazwałbym “zdrowym”. Advantages of dyslexia (because they are) we treat as a nice gift from fate. Disadvantages of disclexiawe treat it like a cold - it is annoying, but it is no excuse to do anything. We learn the rules of spelling, we memorize words that are "impossible to jump" for us and we regularly get poor grades from reading. That was the whole first class. Now it is completely different.
As a dyslexic who, in the opinion of his friends (greetings Agnieszka!), Mastered the perplexity of finding errors in graphic designs, texts, etc., I know that dyslexia can be an advantage or a gift, not an excuse.
Who has never had to deal with dyslexia in two sentences: dyslexics learns a thousand ways how to learn eg to do a specific thing eg memorize, organize tasks, etc. However, once mastered, it is perfect in it. Secondly, the dyslexic is someone who has monstrous allergy to words that do not create images in his brain. If he finds such words too much in one sentence, his brain "hangs" and begins to do interesting things, for example, replace him with letters (such "d" with "g" is already common).
Of course, the variation of dyslexia is more or less the same as the shades of nail polish in Ewczan's cabinet (in a word: duuuuużo) and it has a lot of calculations - who wants to fathom a little about dyslexia, let him read the book "A gift of dyslexia" – fantastyczna pozycja dla nie dyslektyków. Pomaga zrozumieć dlaczego takie „the” i „and” w angielskim dla dyslektów nie istnieją i jak tylko będą mogli je pominąć to to zrobią 🙂
It was supposed to be about reading and here about dyslexia
So I'm going back to the topic. Ewa and Tymek have inherent resistance to reading, like any dyslexic, so they were quite a challenge in learning this skill. When they found the basics, it was necessary to figure out what to do to make them want to repeat and practice reading. We came up with two ideas.
Idea 1: As much as you read, you play so much
Jeśli czytasz to grasz na kompie. Warunek jest jeden. Najpierw czytasz 🙂 potem grasz. He "drew" in this way almost all parts of Harry Potter. And in this holiday Tymoteusz, wants to read the 3-volume series "Five Nights at Freddy's" - a horror for young people, based on a computer game - one book has about 300 pages.

This rule is, unfortunately, a light form of control. That is, there is a "punishment" and "reward". However, if we allow the child to choose books that he wants to read, there is no question of punishment - books are drawn in :). And after some time, we have two awards.
We wanted to create a habit. You read + play = dopamine = habit. You can read more about this mechanism here:

We started with small steps 10 min reading = 20 minutes of playing. Now the standard is 1h reading = 1h playing. If more play is needed then we try to make the extra hours of reading before bedtime - so that the brain can relax and rest before bedtime.
All "bookkeeping" hours read and played is saved on the wall in the kitchen :).
Idea 2: Reading together in the evening
Last year the idea was in a slightly less advanced form than this year. A year ago, Ewa and Tymek chose a piece of text to read aloud before dinner. The idea did not have finesse in it and it did not give kids great happiness, although they read readily because they chose some funny teasers.
Update the idea
This year we are expanding the idea. The new rules are more or less the same: each of the household members (including us) must prepare a fragment of the text for the evening and read it aloud. Reading together we want to do during the preparation of supper and have a bit of a reminder group therapy in a madhouse.

We want to include as much emotions as possible in reading. Wiem, że to działa ponieważ kiedyś (przy zupełnie innej okazji) czytałem moim dzieciom “Pana Tadeusza” i były zachwycone 🙂 – they cried with laughter.
Read texts are also meant to be a topic for conversation during dinner. We are also planning to make a ranking of read texts to introduce some gamification for evening reading. The rules of assessment are banal non-readers rate the reader on a scale of 1 to 5 points. At the end of the holiday, we'll take a summary and think about the celebration together.
Learning to read quickly makes sense
In this school year Ewa and Tymek went to additional general development classes in the field of interesting memory techniques, quick reading, experiments and learning about the surrounding world in an empirical way. Classes were called the "Center of the Universe".

With a big surprise and joy I read in a letter to my parents that Ewa reads with understanding at a rate of 95 words per minute (she started from 71 words per minute), and Timothy reads with understanding at a rate of 210 words per minute (he started from 160 words per minute). As for me, spectacular successes <3
If you combine emotions with reading ...
Jeśli połączymy czytanie z emocjami, dodamy wspólną zabawę, trochę grywalizacji, to możliwe, że wykształcimy w naszych dzieciach, pozytywne skojarzenie dotyczące czytania.
In an atmosphere of mutual acceptance and fun, we will achieve much more than just reading. We will live together emotions that build relationships in our family. W dodatku, jeśli wszyscy będziemy codziennie czytać z naszymi dziećmi, to mocno podbijemy statystki osób czytających wśród dorosłych 🙂 – ku chwale Ojczyzny!
